SA PRAYER CIRCLES

“As in heaven, so in South Africa!”

Transforming South Africa by prayer

HOW WE DO IT

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

SA Prayer Circles is a multi-church prayer movement that aims to transform South Africa by prayer. The strategy that we follow has been given to us by God in 2018 in Potchefstroom when a group of believers approached God for solutions on the ever-increasing deterioration of the city.

The main tenets of this strategy are explained below.

Unity: Praying in parks

A fundamental principle in the strategy is the concept of unity. Jesus warned that a kingdom that is divided against itself, cannot stand (Mark 3:24-25). When a country is at war, it is crucial that the soldiers in the military work together as one united force against the enemy.

Similarly, in the spiritual war that is raging over South Africa we cannot afford to focus on our differences instead on what we have in common: one God, one Savior and one Holy Spirit. In South Africa we have many churches, but they are notoriously reluctant to work together.

Therefore, to overcome church divisions, Prayer Circles are established in public spaces, such as parks, that are ‘neutral ground’ and are not associated with a particular church or religious organization.

When a Prayer Circle gathers in a park to pray for their town or suburb, no one is concerned with who belongs to what church: they focus on their divine assignment to represent Jesus, be salt and light and pray for God’s restoration and intervention in every broken part of their community.

When praying, we love to hold hands in a circle as symbol of agreement and unity.

The Nehemiah principle

In the days of Nehemiah, he was called by God to rebuild the broken walls of Jerusalem. God placed a burden on his heart that is described as ‘sadness of heart’ in Nehemiah 2:2.

In South Africa today, we are witnessing how God is placing a similar burden on the hearts of His remnant to rebuild the broken walls of our country, prayer by prayer. Hundreds of Prayer Circles have been established in South Africa over the past years as God is calling His children to step up in their calling to prayerfully submit our country to Jesus.

Just as in the days of Nehemiah, communities are working together in unity, each one taking responsibility for the rebuilding of their part of the broken wall. Each suburb or town has their own unique set of challenges to pray for and the more Prayer Circles can be established in different areas the more comprehensively we will cover the entire country with prayer. We aim to have at least one Prayer Circle in every town of South Africa, and preferably one in every suburb of larger cities.

Crosses

We plant a in the park (or other public area) where we pray to mark the convening point for the Prayer Circle and indicate that the town/suburb has been dedicated to God. The cross also serves as a visible sign that the area has been proclaimed for Jesus.

We inscribe the cross with the words: As in Heaven, so in this city/town. This is in line with the way Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6:10: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”. Our vision is to establish God’s will in our towns and cities and see them transformed, filled with the glory of God!

Prayer Points

The leadership of SA Prayer Circles develops generic weekly Prayer Points as the Holy Spirit leads and send to them out on a WhatsApp broadcast group to the Prayer Circle Leaders. The leaders then re-distribute the prayer points to their respective Prayer Circle members.

These generic prayer points ensure that the most critical challenges in our country and towns are addressed in prayer but do not exclude the site-specific prayer points that each group of prayer warriors identify for their areas, as led by the Holy Spirit.

Weekly meetings
Prayer Circles usually get together on Mondays around 18h00 to pray for the week that lies ahead but each Prayer Circle can set their own time.
